Ask the comic shop

Can you clean an old comic at home without damaging it?

Sometimes, but only very gently and only if the comic is dry, stable and free from mould, water damage or brittle paper. If there is any doubt, leave it alone and ask for advice first.

Do you help with comics going in for grading?

Yes. We give cleaning advice that fits grading prep, along with pre-submission checks and safe packing guidance so you do not introduce new flaws before submission.

How often should I check my comic storage?

Every 3 to 6 months is a good starting point. Check sooner if the room is damp, very dusty, or if the comics are handled often for reading or display.

Gentle comic care for South African collections

Our cleaning advice service is for collectors who want to protect local superhero comics, special editions and related collectables without causing avoidable damage. We focus on light surface care, safe handling, and sensible storage habits that suit South African conditions, from coastal humidity in Cape Town to dust and dry air inland. The aim is simple: keep paper clean enough for reading, collecting and grading preparation, while avoiding methods that can stain, press fibres flat, or remove original print detail.

We help with common issues such as loose dust, light surface marks, fingerprints on bags, and the kind of handling wear that builds up when comics are moved between shelves, boxes and event bags. We do not recommend wet cleaning, abrasive cloths, household sprays or trying to lift stains from older paper stock. If a comic has water damage, mould, sticky residue or torn pages, the safest answer is usually not to clean at home at all.

A clean comic is good, a damaged comic is expensive.

What the cleaning advice includes

This service is practical and specific. We assess the item first, then guide you on the least risky next step based on paper type, age, condition and whether the comic is for reading, long term storage or grading submission. For many collectors, the right advice is to do less, not more.

  • Visual condition check for dust, creasing, scuffs and edge wear
  • Guidance on safe dry cleaning methods only, where suitable
  • Advice on bag and board replacement for standard storage sizes
  • Tips for separating comics that should not rub against each other
  • Notes on how to handle inserts, posters and loose collectibles
  • Storage planning for boxes, shelving and display areas

We also advise on when not to attempt cleaning. If a comic shows brittle paper, colour lifting, foxing, mould, severe spine stress or old tape, the better route is preservation and careful packing. That kind of decision can save a lot of regret later on.

Step by step process from enquiry to advice

Collectors reach us through the enquiry form on our contact page and tell us what they need cleaned, checked or prepared for storage. If the item is part of a larger collection, you can send a short list with the main condition concerns, for example dust, bag marks, corner dings or storage smell. We then advise on the safest path and whether a pre-submission check makes sense before any grading work.

  • Step 1: Submit the enquiry form with clear notes and photos if requested
  • Step 2: We review condition and identify any items that should not be handled at home
  • Step 3: You receive practical cleaning and storage instructions matched to the comic type
  • Step 4: If needed, we recommend packaging changes, new bags or better box layout
  • Step 5: For graded or valuable comics, we explain how to prep for submission safely

Where delivery is involved, we also give safe packing guidance for courier collection across Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Gqeberha. Comics should be packed flat, with rigid support and no loose movement inside the parcel, otherwise corners can take a knock in transit.

Turnaround times and pricing approach

Turnaround depends on how many items are being checked and whether the request is for a single comic or a full collection. Small cleaning advice requests are usually handled quickly, while larger collection reviews may take longer because we check the condition of each item rather than giving broad generic advice. We keep the process straightforward and practical, with no unnecessary extras.

Pricing is based on the type of advice required, the number of comics, and whether you need a simple care note or a fuller collection review with storage planning. We do not push fixed packages that do not suit the condition of the books. If your collection has mixed value items, it often makes more sense to separate the cleaner books from the fragile ones and deal with them differently. That keeps the cost fair and the advice useful.

For collectors in Observatory, Bellville, Stellenbosch and across the Western Cape, in-person handling questions can often be resolved quickly through the enquiry form. For out-of-town collectors, the same practical guidance applies and courier timing is kept in mind so comics are not left in hot vans or damp storerooms for longer than needed.

When cleaning is worth doing and when to leave it alone

Not every comic should be cleaned. A light surface wipe on a modern bagged comic can be fine, but older paper or a book with active damage should usually be left untouched. If you are collecting for display, grading or resale, even a small mistake can lower the condition more than the original dust ever would. That is why our advice is conservative by design.

As a rule, you may consider gentle care when the comic has dry dust, a cleanable outer bag, or minor shelf storage marks. You should stop and ask for help if you see any of the following:

  • Water marks, tide lines or sticky residue
  • Mould, musty odours or spotting on pages
  • Brittle pages, flaking colour or tears at staples
  • Loose inserts that could shift or crease during handling
  • Unknown stains that may spread if rubbed

In coastal areas like Gqeberha and Durban, humidity can make paper soften and bags cling. In dry months inland, static can pull dust onto covers. We factor that in when advising how often to inspect and replace storage materials.

Handling and care

Good comic care is not a once-off job. We recommend a regular check based on how the collection is stored and how often it is handled. Comics that stay in sealed boxes or drawers need less attention than books that are pulled out for reading, selling or display.

As a practical guide, inspect your collection every 3 to 6 months for visible dust, bag wear, box crush and humidity changes. Replace worn bags and boards as needed, and re-stack boxes so the comic edges are not pressing against each other. For display items, rotate exposure and keep them out of direct sun. If you are building a long term collection, combine cleaning advice with storage planning so the same damage does not keep returning.

We also help collectors create simple routines for new arrivals. Clean hands before handling, keep drinks away from the table, avoid food crumbs, and return each comic to its bag after reading. It sounds basic, but those habits save money over time and keep the collection in better shape.
