Somerset West Office Display

A Somerset West office wanted a neat collection that would lift the room without getting in the way of daily work. We planned a compact display with framed comics, small figures and practical storage so the space stayed easy to use and simple to keep clean.

Ask the comic shop

Can a small office still display a comic collection neatly?

Yes. The key is to use a limited number of framed pieces and keep the shelf items compact so the room stays tidy and usable.

How do you protect comics in an office environment?

Use sleeves, proper backing, sensible spacing and keep framed items out of direct sunlight to reduce wear from dust, glare and moisture changes.

Can you help with future additions to an existing collection?

Yes. We can plan the collection so new comics and collectables slot in properly without making the office feel crowded.

Office brief from Somerset West

The client was a private office in Somerset West, used for meetings, admin work and occasional client visits. They wanted the room to feel more personal, but not crowded, and they asked for a collection that could be appreciated at a glance without taking over the walls or shelves. The brief was to build a tidy display around original local superhero artwork and collectables, with enough order that the space still felt professional.

The team had a clear list of concerns from the start. The room had limited wall space, a mix of open shelving and closed cupboards, and a lot of natural light during the day. That meant we had to think about glare on framed pieces, dust build-up and where small figures could sit safely without being knocked over during normal office use.

  • Location: Somerset West office, Western Cape
  • Use case: client meetings, daily admin and light display traffic
  • Display style: compact, tidy and easy to maintain
  • Collection focus: original local superhero comics and figures

A neat office display should work as hard as the room itself.

What the space needed to handle

The room had a few practical limits. The office gets warm in summer, and like many Cape Town area workspaces it can also feel dry indoors when aircon is running. We had to consider sunlight, dust and where people naturally walk when entering the room. Nothing could block filing access or interfere with the main work surface.

We kept the layout low risk and simple. Framed comics were placed where they could be seen from the seating area, but not in direct sun. Figures were grouped in short runs rather than spread out too thinly, so the collection looked intentional. Storage boxes and protective sleeves were built into the plan from the start, because a good display in a working office needs backup storage as much as visible pieces.

  • Key constraint: limited wall width and shelf depth
  • Environmental factor: strong daylight and indoor dust
  • Practical factor: safe clearance for routine office movement

Pieces supplied and display plan

We supplied a mix of framed comic issues, compact character figures, protective sleeves, backing materials and storage guidance for the overflow stock. The display was arranged in layers so the eye moved naturally from the framed wall section to the shelf units below. Smaller figures were used to add variety without clutter, and the comics were chosen for strong cover art and clean presentation.

The office already had a decent amount of usable furniture, so we did not replace the whole room. Instead, we worked with what was there and added only what was needed to improve order and presentation. The result was a display that looked collected over time, not forced in all at once. That suited the client, who wanted a workspace that still felt like an office rather than a showroom.

  • Framed comics for wall impact
  • Compact figures for shelf detail
  • Protective sleeves for handling and storage
  • Archival-style backing to support long term keeping
  • Simple labels for collection sorting

Display and storage at home

We worked around business hours and made sure the office could still function during the changeover. Because the client needed things to stay orderly, we also set out a simple organisation system for future additions. That made it easier to keep the display consistent if new comics or figures are added later on.

  • Week 1: brief, measurements and item selection
  • Week 2: prep, framing checks and storage planning
  • Week 3: placement, final adjustments and handover

How the final room changed

Once the collection was in place, the office felt more considered without becoming busy. The framed comics added colour to a plain wall and the figures gave the shelves a clear focal point. Visitors could tell immediately that the space belonged to people with a real interest in local superhero collecting, but the room still worked as a normal office. That balance was the main win.

The client also gained a better way to manage the collection going forward. Items had a set home, storage was easier to track, and the risk of damage from stacking or careless handling dropped quite a lot. The office now has a display that can grow gradually, which matters when you collect over time instead of buying everything at once. It looks better and it is easier to keep clean.

  • Better visual interest for meetings and visitors
  • Clearer organisation for current and future items
  • Lower risk of corner wear, dust and accidental knocks
  • Room still usable for daily office work

What We Would Do Again

We would use the same approach again for another office space in Somerset West or nearby. Start with a clean brief, measure the actual wall and shelf areas, then choose only the pieces that suit the room. That method works well in smaller workspaces because it avoids overcrowding and keeps the collection practical.

We would also keep the same focus on storage from the start. A display is only part of the job, and in a working office the hidden part matters just as much. Good sleeves, sensible spacing and a simple sorting plan make it easier to enjoy the collection long term. It also helps when the space gets busy, because the whole setup stays easier to manage.

  • Best suited to offices with limited wall space
  • Works well for mixed framed and shelf displays
  • Ideal where dust, glare and daily movement need planning
  • Easy to extend later with more local comic stock
